Osamu Tezuka's 'Princess Knight' Reimagined as Netflix Anime Film 'THE RIBBON HERO'

The classic manga Ribbon no Kishi (Princess Knight) by Osamu Tezuka is getting a new adaptation. The Netflix Original anime film THE RIBBON HERO will premiere exclusively on the platform worldwide in August 2026.

Yuki Igarashi, known for directing the Star Wars: Visions short The Duel, will helm his first feature-length film. Character designs are by Kei Mochizuki (Fate/Grand Order) with design assistance from Mai Yoneyama (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners). Animation character design is by Issei Arakaki, with Cedric Herole as art director.

The teaser visual, drawn by Mochizuki, features the protagonist—a girl with a large red ribbon, a direct reference to Tezuka's original character Sapphire. The tagline reads, "I don't want to be the person someone else wishes for."

Igarashi's studio, OUTLINE, will handle animation production.

In a statement, director Yuki Igarashi said his work contains "respect for Osamu Tezuka and for the roots of Ribbon no Kishi in the Takarazuka Revue."

The film's official website and X (formerly Twitter) account are now live.
