Classic Gag Anime 'Obocchamakun' Returns as 'REBORN' in 2027

The legendary 1980s gag manga and anime Obocchamakun will return as a completely new series in 2027. Titled Obocchamakun REBORN, the anime will air on TV Asahi's network in Japan.

The series follows the absurdly wealthy heir, Obocchama, as his outrageous antics disrupt the lives of everyone around him. The original manga by Yoshinori Kobayashi ran from 1986 and spawned a hit anime from 1989 to 1992.

Original voice actor Chie Kōjiro will reprise her role as the protagonist. She stated she accepted the offer immediately, feeling she could still deliver the character's signature voice and energy.

Creator Yoshinori Kobayashi expressed curiosity about how a new generation will receive the humor.

The reboot's production was initiated after the original anime series became a surprise hit in India during 2021, topping kids' channel ratings for 40 out of 52 weeks. This led to a co-production between Japanese and Indian studios.

A teaser visual and promotional video have been released. The video, available on YouTube, features the protagonist's return and his trademark nonsense language, "Chama-go."

The new series will include never-before-animated stories from the manga alongside original episodes supervised by Kobayashi. The official website and social media accounts are now live.
