GATE SEASON2 TV Anime Announced for 2027, First Promo Video Released

The TV anime adaptation of the popular light novel series GATE SEASON2: Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri (GATE SEASON2: Thus the JSDF Fought There, On That Sea) is scheduled to premiere in 2027. The first promotional video is now available on YouTube.

The series is a sequel to the 2015-2016 anime GATE, which followed the Japan Self-Defense Forces entering a fantasy world through a mysterious portal. The new season shifts the conflict to the seas of this other world.

The story follows two members of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Commander Edajima Goro and Petty Officer Tokushima Hajime, a former skilled chef. They are dispatched on a submarine to rescue an abducted American journalist in the Special Region's Azure Sea, an area rife with warring island nations and pirates.

Key staff from the first anime season are returning, including composer Keisho Fujisawa. The anime will be produced by Studio M2, with Takahiro Takahashi directing and Tatsuhiko Urahata handling series composition and scripts.

In related news, a manga adaptation of the GATE SEASON2 novels began serialization today. The manga is illustrated by Satoru Sanao, who also worked on the manga for the first GATE series. The first chapter is available on the AlphaPolis website.

An interview with the original novel's author, Takumi Yanai, discussing the manga launch and anime adaptation, has been published by Comic Natalie.
