The popular manga "Omae, Tanuki ni Narane ka?" ("Hey, Won't You Become a Tanuki?") will be adapted into a TV anime.

The series follows Koganemaru, a "baketanuki" (monster tanuki), who scouts humans to transform them into tanuki to increase his mountain's population.

Jun Kamiya, known for directing "Kingdom" and "Yakuna Magcup mo," will helm the project. Animation production is handled by Nippon Animation, the studio behind "Araiguma Rasukaru" and "Chibi Maruko-chan."

A teaser visual and promotional video have been released.

"It is a great honor for me, who learned so much from Nippon Animation's works as a child, to have this connection," wrote original creator Tomo Nakagawa. "I hope the anime becomes a work that gently nestles in viewers' hearts and gives them a warm feeling when they recall it."

The original manga (Ichijinsha's comic POOL label) has nine volumes out, with a tenth scheduled for May 25, 2026.
