Anime 'Nippon Sangoku' Sequel Confirmed After Global Prime Video Success

A sequel to the Prime Video original anime series Nippon Sangoku (Japan Three Kingdoms) is now in production. The announcement was made on September 3 at a Prime Video lineup event, accompanied by a new promotional video featuring fresh animation.

The first season, a co-production with Amazon MGM Studios, premiered in April 2026 and became the most-watched new series on Prime Video in Japan during its first month. It also entered Prime Video's global Top 10 ranking. The manga's circulation doubled from 1 million to 2 million copies within a month of the anime's debut.

Original author Ikka Matsuki commented on the sequel's production. "The ember quietly lit in the first series will eventually become a flame that scorches the era and shakes people's destinies," Matsuki wrote. "I look forward to seeing what scenery the history recorded in the original work will depict with the unique interpretation and expression of video."

The newly released video begins with protagonist Sankaku Seiki's pivotal conversation with Higashimachi Kiki and seamlessly compiles key historical moments. It concludes with a first look at an older Seiki in the sequel, reaffirming his resolve for a peaceful world.

The anime is based on Matsuki's manga, serialized on Shogakukan's Manga One app and Ura Sunday website. The first season features an opening theme, "火種 (Hidane)" by Tatsuya Kitani, and an ending theme, "誓い (Chikai)" by Leina. The score is composed by Kevin Penkin, with animation by Studio Kafka.

The full first season of Nippon Sangoku is currently streaming on Prime Video and U-NEXT. The official website and social media accounts have been updated with the sequel information.
