Manga 'To You, Gender "Mona Lisa"' Gets TV Anime by Shaft

The manga To You, Gender "Mona Lisa" by Mayuru Yoshimura will be adapted into a television anime. The series, with over 1 million copies in print, will be animated by Shaft.

Shaft, the studio behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series, will handle production. A teaser visual has been released alongside the announcement.

The story is set in a world where people are born without a gender. Around age 12, their bodies begin to change toward their desired gender, settling by 14. The protagonist, Himase, remains the sole "genderless" person at 18, navigating life, identity, and romance with childhood friends Ritsu and Shiori.

Original creator Mayuru Yoshimura provided a commemorative illustration and comment for the adaptation announcement.

A special panel on August 1 at AnimagiC 2026 in Mannheim, Germany will feature the world premiere of the main cast reveal and a teaser promotional video.

The panel will also include a live drawing session by Yoshimura and a talk with Shaft producer Mitsutoshi Kubota and CyberAgent producer Manami Kabashima. AnimagiC runs from July 31 to August 2 at the Congress Center Rosengarten.

The manga is published by Square Enix on Gangan Online, with 10 volumes currently available. The anime's official website and X account are now live.
