RENNE began posting cover songs online in May 2026, using only his voice and piano or guitar. He has never shown his face. His follower count surpassed 10,000 in under two months.

"Citrus" is described as intimate bedroom pop, built around a four-on-the-floor rhythm with dreamy synths and his vocals. RENNE handled all songwriting, arrangement, and mixing himself at home.

In a statement, RENNE compared the song to a scent. "It's a perfume-like song," he said. "I wanted to fill it with sounds that evoke the smell of citrus." He cited sounds like AirPods connecting, acoustic guitar harmonics, and various bells. "Just as putting on perfume can change the air and atmosphere of a place in an instant, I'd be happy if people could listen to this song with that same feeling."
